“Everything that is past is either a learning experience to grow on, a beautiful memory to reflect on, or a motivating factor to act upon.” – Denis Waitley

I apologize in advance that this Weekly Wellness is personal to me. But I as finished my last shift at Mercy Hospital this week, knowing that after maternity leave I cannot return to the familiar faces and residency family that I have grown to love over the last 7 years, I began thinking about all the experiences I have had.

Not every experience at work or home will be a positive one. Not every experience will be negative. Sometimes those experiences are directly under our control, but other times they are not.

Yet no matter what emotions these experience evoke, we always can take something from them. We can always learn something new, embrace the next experience, and discover something about ourselves, or a better way to handle situations.

Although my next experience will be with a different ER and residency family, you will all always hold a special place in my heart. I will miss you all, but as a former Brown Coater have no doubt you will all go on to do great things. Thank you for all the experiences that have helped shape me into a better teacher, colleague, and physician.

WEEKLY WELLNESS: This week, try to take something positive from every experience. Instead of begrudging things that don’t go as planned, become a better you for having experienced them.
